GAZ Shocks – Coilover suspension
Name 3 of the most important things to you as a driver about a car when going for a fast drive. Go ahead, say them out loud. I’d be happy to bet that the majority of you will have said something along the lines of “handling” or “good ride quality”. This is unarguably a fundamental part of any driver’s car. When out on a blast it’s important to all of us to have confidence that our car will perform to the best it can over bumps, dips, undulations and corners. Many of you will have spent the extra few quid already in the tyre shop to get more sticky rubber on the wheels, but without a tight and dialed in suspension package to force the tyres firmly back onto the road after each bump and roll, you’re wasting your money. You may indeed have very good suspension as standard, many VAG cars from factory now have a sporty ride to be envied by rival manufacturers. However, you’d like to think you could upgrade if you wanted too, right? No fear, you can!
To the freshmen of the car tuning scene, there are a few options to choose from. The most popular chosen remedy to any wayward handling is to install a coilover suspension setup. These are a direct replacement for the springs and shocks your car has from factory, and when you partake in an install, coilovers only share a few parts from your original bouncers, such as your top mounts, top hats and bearings. What this means is that even the very inexperienced DIY mechanic with a few tools and some free time can indulge him or herself into a job on their car, which will be satisfying both in the job itself, and in the experience felt during a drive once complete. The effect a tuned suspension setup has on any car is astonishing, and leaves us feeling like our favourite racing drivers, even if we really aren’t close!
With introduction level coilovers, you can adjust the ride height on your car to what suits you best for style, handling and ride comfort. As you change the ride height the bump (stiffness on compression) and rebound (speed of full return from compressed) will automatically change in relation to the chose ride height. With higher level coilovers you can adjust the bump and rebound settings manually along with ride height, which will allow any driver to tune their car to handle the best it can for their driving style and needs. The possibilities really are huge, and thanks to coilovers it’s easier than ever to make your car the best it can be for real world daily driving, but with the change of a few settings can be tweaked for superior handling on a track day.
Suspension upgrades have become so popular on the tuning scene that they’re not limited to sporty or track orientated cars, oh no not at all. In fact, some of the best known within the VW community are the VW Transporter drivers, who love to make their surf vans more sporty. We couldn’t agree more, a modified Transporter is about the coolest a van can be!
